Abstract

Background: Malathion, an organophosphate compound has been proved to play a major role in tissue damage by inducing oxidative stress via generation of free radical.

Aim: In this study, we examined the consequence of exposure to organophosphate compound malathion of commercial grade and evaluated the protective effect of ellagic acid, vitamin c present in pomegranate and lemon juices respectively.

Material and methods: Malathion was administered orally with saline 400mg/kg body weight (BW) daily for 7 days against the respectively juices containing 100mg/kg, 200mg/kg of ellagic acid and vitamin c for 7 and 14 days.

Results: At the end of the experiments results showed that under the influence of pesticides, the decrease in the body weight, SOD, CAT, MDA and GSH of rats pesticides treated group compared with normal group and antioxidant treated group, biochemical parameter and histopathology of liver and kidney were estimated.

Conclusion: The present study thus gives an insight ill-effect of the malathion and protective role of juices containing antioxidants in minimizing those effects.
